Update 2, July 2005What contributions are science centres and museums making in your community? What best-practice approaches or innovative approaches are working well in other science centres and museums? This is the July 2005 update on this project focusing on such questions in the APEC region. If you have not come across this project before …The APEC Science Centre Impact Project aims to strengthen linkages and information sharing among science centres and museums in the APEC region, and to help them articulate, to governments and other stakeholders, their contributions to community and economic interests. More about the project. Project themes for 2005This year, the project is concentrating on three areas of science centre activity - increasing access for new or difficult-to-reach audiences; helping people to understand difficult or cutting-edge or controversial science topics and issues; and partnerships with other organisations. If your organisation has any stories to share about a successful program in one of these areas, we would love to hear from you and work with you on the best way to showcase your story on this project's website. It might be as easy as a link to an existing part of your own website! Contact us to share your story The human face of science
Dr Mamoru Mohri At this project's scoping meeting in Hong Kong in December 2004, Dr Mamoru Mohri (Director, National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo, Japan) described how the concept of ‘humanising science - people teaching people’ underlies all the museum’s activities. He included many examples of how members of a multi-disciplinary team - including scientists, educators, a film maker, psychologists, interpretation staff and volunteers - interact with each other and with museum visitors. A conference on partnerships for science centresThe annual conference of the Association of Science-Technology Centres (ASTC), to be held in Richmond, Virginia USA on 15-18 October 2005, has the theme ‘Partnerships for Excellence: Seeking Strategic Alliances to Increase our Impact’. This conference will be a great opportunity for science centre and museum professionals to explore what partnerships offer and what they demand, to look at opportunities for transformational partnerships, and to see how partnerships can lead to meaningful results for communities as well as for the individual partners. More about this and other conferences. Focus on partnerships
Ms Lesley Lewis In another presentation at the scoping meeting, Ms Lesley Lewis (CEO of Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, Canada) outlined some of the partnerships from which her centre has benefited in recent years and described the results achieved for industry and education-sector partners through two of these partnerships. She also included six pointers on how to ensure that partnerships bring maximum impact for all parties involved. Download Ms Lewis’ presentation (pdf).
