Bulletin 2 to ASPAC Members

November 2006

IGLO (International action on GLObal warming) is a worldwide initiative of the Association of Science-Technology Centres to raise public awareness of climate change and its impact. ASPAC is partnering with ASTC to support this initiative in association with International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008. For more information see ASTC's Project IGLO website.

Stern Review = Stern Warning

The release of the Stern Review Report on the Economics of Climate Change has been a call to action for Governments around the world. The policy decisions and choices we make now, have serious ramifications for the future of the planet. Now more than ever, the public need to be well informed about the science behind climate change and what it will mean if no action is taken.

The work of ASPAC and IGLO is increasingly relevant, and IPY will bring this into sharp focus. The pre-publication edition of the Stern Review is now available online, downloadable by chapter or theme.

An insight into Antarctica

Summer season in Antarctica is starting, and Questacon has been lucky enough to find a geophysicist who will be travelling to Antarctica in early December and staying until early March, who is prepared to share his experiences with us. Our scientist will be providing pictures and a blog of life on the driest continent, as well as answering questions from the public.

Is there something you’ve always wanted to know about the Antarctic? This could be your chance to ask. Be sure to look at Polar Passport for a personal insight into Antarctica! Or you can subscribe to the RSS feed for automatic updates.

Dimensions of Climate Change

The latest issue of the ASTC publication “Dimensions” focuses on science centres and global warming. Providing an overview of IPY and the IGLO initiative, the issue explores the various roles that science centres and museums can play in informing members of the public about climate change.  The issue also features updates on the different networks and who is doing what, where, including a description of the different ASPAC initiatives.

What is happening in your area?

In the first edition of the IGLO update ASPAC members were asked what they were planning on doing during IPY. Thank you to all who responded. The results have been collated and are available for your information. If you have added programmes, had ideas or identified any opportunities since the last bulletin, please let us know.
