Over the ensuing 136 years the Museum has developed into a collection- and scholarship-rich organisation, caring for over 1.8 million treasures on behalf of the community and presenting eight themed long-term galleries, an interactive science centre - Discovery World, a lush, living, tropical environment - Tropical Forest Discovery Zone, the Search Centre and changing gallery spaces, culminating in a dynamic range of exhibitions and programmes for the education and entertainment of over 360 000 people. Catering for all ages, Discovery World is an interactive science and technology centre that excites curiosity and stimulates imagination. In addition to the long-term exhibits, Discovery World presents touring shows and special exhibitions, and a changing programme of 'Science Shows' which add value for visitors. The Tropical Forest brings visitors face to face with some of nature’s most beautiful butterflies. Hundreds of these enchanting creatures roam free – some even stopping (on you) to say hello! Visitors experience a hot and steamy rainforest from above and below, encountering an amazing array of flora and fauna within. Featuring around 1000 imported tropical butterflies, the Tropical Forest is also home to live tarantulas, turtles, finches and other hot-weather-happy inhabitants. A gardener’s paradise, the rainforest includes awide variety of lush tropical plants including orchids, bromeliads, bananas, coffee, cardamom, passionfruit and more! Special education programmes for schools draw on collection items and scientific resources of the Museum. Sleepovers in Discovery World Tropical Forest are an especially popular attraction.
