Scitech Discovery Centre, Australia
![]() MissionTo increase interest and participation by Western Australians in science and technology. Date OpenedAugust 1988 Activity SummaryScitech is Western Australia's hands-on science and technology centre located in the City West complex in West Perth. The centre aims to inspire visitors to explore their world, to discover that science and technology can be both understandable and enjoyable. It is a place that develops a fascination for learning. Scitech achieves this by providing hands-on adventures of discovery with ever-changing feature exhibitions and supporting school and general public activities. In the last twelve years Scitech has established itself as a leader both nationally and internationally in the design and manufacture of science centre exhibits and exhibitions. Major exhibitions have been constructed and toured to science centres and museums throughout Australia and overseas. These exhibitions are now considered benchmarks in Australia for interactivity and visitor attraction. Scitech's forensic science exhibition Whodunit? has recently completed an international tour of Europe and South East Asia, whilst six other exhibitions are currently drawing crowds in Australia and New Zealand. In April 2004, Scitech launched Horizon, the largest planetarium in the southern hemisphere. This state-of-the-art digital technology facility has added a new dimension to the highly successful home of science, which attracts in excess of 200 000 visitors per annum. Scitech's programs reach further than its City West base, delivering science experiences to over 80 000 people in rural and remote WA with its Kids' Science State initiative. Scitech is also the home of the CSIRO Science Education Centre, which has a touring wing, Lab-on-Legs. Other programs that Scitech provides include: Science Shows, Puppet Shows, Holiday Programs, Birthday Parties, Sleepovers, Scitrekker membership program, teacher Professional Development, Discoverland and the SoundHouse.
