January 2012

Congratulations are due to the new Executive Council 2012-13, who have taken office on 1 January. They are:

Since 1 January 2012, ASPAC also has a new Executive Director, Dr Andrew D GIGER.

December 2011

The 2012 ASPAC Conference and Trade Show will be hosted by Science Centre Singapore on 16-21 April 2012, and planning is in full swing. Delegates can look forward to a range of interesting sessions and events, some of which never seen before at an ASPAC Conference. There is also an unprecedented number of pre-conference workshops and Learning Journeys. The conference website provides information on the programme, registration, accommodation options and more.

To contribute to the proceedings with a Parallel Session presentation or a poster, please respond to the Call for Abstracts.

January 2011

Planning is progressing well for the 2011 ASPAC Conference at Guangdong Science Center, Guangzhou, China on 17-20 May 2011. Program and registration information is available on the official conference website www.aspac2011.com. The call for papers invites short inputs to the conference subthemes.

Science Center Singapore has been selected as the host for the 2012 ASPAC Conference. More details will be provided during the closing ceremony of the 2011 ASPAC Conference.

The National Science Museum, Daejon, Korea has been selected as the host of the 2013 ASPAC Conference.

December 2010

Following the adoption of the ASPAC Strategic Plan 2010-2015, three working groups are:

  • Reviewing ASPAC governance, including the structure of ASPAC Executive Council, and ASPAC regional boundaries, considering the case to include countries to the west – Bangaladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, etc.
  • Developing a detailed plan for implementing new member services during 2011 and 2012.
  • Developing a model for resourcing ASPAC's administration and activities, including the growth of member services and benefits over the next five years.

The work of these groups will be reported at the ASPAC Conference in May 2011. The recently approved 2011 membership fees are part of the five year strategic plan to increase member services and benefits.

September 2010

The deadline for 6SCWC session proposals has been extended until 15 October 2010. The 6th Science Centre World Congress will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, 4-8 September 2011. All proposals must be submitted using the electronic session proposal form available on the 6SCWC website. Visit the Congress website to download the Call for Sessions document for full information, including deadlines, proposal requirements and descriptions of the sub-themes and session formats.

June 2010

ASPAC welcomes three new Full Members – Australian Museum, Australia; Te Manawa Museums Trust, New Zealand; and Rangsit Science Centre, Thailand. This brings the total ASPAC membership to 62 members across 20 countries and administrative regions across the Asia Pacific region and beyond.

ASPAC is contributing to the planning of the 6th Science Centre World Congress to be held in Cape Town, 4-8 September 2011. ASPAC members are encouraged to plan now to attend this high level, triennial meeting which brings together science centres around the world to formulate new directions for the field. Session proposals can now be submitted and the ASPAC representatives on the International Planning Committee (IPC) are available to assist in the preparation of proposals. Please contact Ms Tengku Narasiah IBRAHIM (Petrosains, Malaysia), Mr Brenton HONEYMAN (Questacon, Australia) or Dr Xu Yanhao (China Science and Technology Museum), the ASPAC representatives on the IPC of the World Congress.

April 2010

Over the coming months, the ASPAC Executive Council is developing a strategic five year plan for the network. An Executive Council working group, headed by Mr Alan BRIEN, is leading this initiative. The Executive Council looks forward to sharing drafts of the plan to seek the comment and input of ASPAC Full Members.

March 2010

Congratulations to Shimrath Paul and his team at Otago Museum and Discovery World for organising and hosting the successful 2010 ASPAC Conference in Dunedin and Queenstown. Although at the southern extremity of the ASPAC region, the Conference program and the spectacular scenery of the Otago region attracted over 100 delegates from 56 science centres and museums across 19 countries and administrative regions in the Asia Pacific region and beyond.

The newly elected ASPAC Executive Council met in Dunedin, New Zealand, for their first meeting on 21 March 2010. This meeting considered the progress of activities of ASPAC since the May 2009 ASPAC Executive Council meeting, noting the growth in ASPAC membership from 51 to 59 full, associate and sustaining members. The meeting appointed Mr Brenton HONEYMAN to a further term as ASPAC Executive Director, Ms Tengku Nasariah IBRAHIM as ASPAC Conference Committee Convenor, Mr Chee-kuen YIP as ASPAC Archives Project Convenor, and Ms Ganigar CHEN as ASPAC Assistant Secretary.

December 2009

Following a competitive selection process, ASPAC is pleased to announce the three ASPAC Fellows selected to travel to New Zealand to participate in the 2010 ASPAC Conference. Congratulations to:

  • Sri Wahyu Cahya Ningsih, Pusat Peragaan Iptek (PPIPTEK), Indonesia
  • Nelson C C Chen, National Science and Technology Museum, Taiwan
  • Florencio Gando Jr, Philippine Science Centrum, Philippines
